What is scratch resistance?

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The Mohs scale quantifies the hardness of minerals, that is, the resistance that a given mineral offers to the scratch. That is, the removal of particles from its surface. The diamond scratches the glass, so it is harder than the glass.

In general, ceramic tiles with a shiny surface show more scratch, even if they have PEI 4 or 5. Therefore, they require greater care during the laying/construction stages, as well as in use and maintenance.

Remember that the sand (quartz) has a MOHS hardness of 7, being able to scratch most ceramic tiles, Porcelain tiles and shiny natural stones, which normally have a hardness between 3 and 5. It is, therefore, necessary to protect the floor after application, mainly in the construction phase.

The following table provides the hardness index of some materials present in nature, on a scale called MOHS:

Care to avoid scratches on products with a shiny surface, specified for the floor:

Before starting laying on the product, try to identify whether the painting, enameled tile laying, electrical, plumbing and plaster laying works have already been carried out, etc. If these works have not yet taken place, try to protect the area with cardboard and cover with plastic (black canvas), to avoid direct contact with abrasive dirt during the work and when occupying the property.

During the occupation, and to avoid direct contact of furniture on the product, protect the furniture feet with carpets, and at the entrance to the property, provide an organic doormat.

In day-to-day maintenance, use only household cleaning products, free of acids in their composition.

There are special waxes for shiny products on the market, which are applied over the ceramic to form a protective layer on the surface, preventing direct contact with sand.
